Springfield road butchers

Started by: TheEternalShore (2)

I walk down Springfield road quite regularly and see the remains of an old shop front inbetween throstlenest and the springy pub. From what i can find online this used to be a butchers. I grew up in springfield in the 90's and can't remember it being open. Id love to hear some more history on this place or any pictures.

I assume the building noq is owned to the house next door, but it doesnt look in great condition. It looks as if there is a lean on the gable end, which is a shame.

The butcher's was called McLeod's. I was told that the owner was the uncle of the Saint John Fisher P.E./ rugby teacher Steve McLeod.

The 1939 Register lists numbers 37 and 39 as a master butchers. Head of family John McLeod.
Ditto in the 1911 census.
The accompanying notes state that there 209 butchers in the Wigan area in 1939.
